98 points and the best Grenache in Australia

There are only a handful of times each year that the Australian wine sector pauses and turns their collective attention to an event. Thanks to more than 40 years and 40 books, magazines and newspaper columns, James Halliday has built a reputation as the preeminent authority on Australian wine. Each year, from more than 10,000 bottles from 3,500 wineries the best of the best wines are selected and announced.

We are thrilled to be namedThe Best Grenachein the 2023 Halliday Wine Companion with our 2020 Alpha Crucis Old Vine Grenache.

The wine received98 pointsand James provided the following notes, “From 90 year old Blewitt Springs bush vines. The bouquet is expressive and enticing, as is the gorgeous, juicy and mouth-watering medium-bodied palate. Moving the wine back and forth in the mouth unlocks rivulets of earthy spices, running through pomegranate and red forest fruits. Precision and purity.”

The Alpha Crucis Old Vine Grenache now has achieved98 points for each of the 2018, 2019 and 2020 vintages. This is a standard and consistency only achieved by the best of the best wineries.

Fortunately, this focus on quality is not limited to the Old Vine Grenache, but shared with all Alpha Crucis wines. James Halliday’s colleague, Master of Wine Ned Godwin provided the following review for the 2020 Alpha Crucis Syrah,

96 Points,

“A cull of the best barrels across the 3 subregions. A mere 5% new wood, I often wonder, ‘why bother?’ Yet this makes sense. It is as good as the Clarendon which – based on the tannic virtues and clove-driven exotica of the aromas – must be driving this.Damn!South Australian Syrah is almost an oxymoron, yet I enjoy having preconceptions destroyed. This achieves that.A miracle! The tannins, a quilt with an exotic weave. The acidity, palpably natural. The length, endless. This is statuesque and absolutely gorgeous.

These are results that all of us at Chalk Hill are immensely proud of and it’s testament to our uncompromising focus on making exceptional wines. Alpha Crucis has been quietly developing a reputation that we will build on into the future.

Unsurprisingly we've sold out of the 2020 Alpha Crucis Old Vine Grenache but we managed to secure a limited number of bottles from our museum stock to share with our friends and family.
